forces are positioned at the border poised to launch a ground attack if that order comes. israel's cabinet has authorized the call-ups of up to 75,000 reservists. a member of israel's government who is not aligned with prime minister netanyahu's coalition, seems to be beyond control, end quote. the u.s. state department is calling it a very dangerous situation. president obama talked to the leaders of israel and egypt and we are told secretary of state clinton has been working the phones trying to muster international pressure to diffuse the situation rockets have been flying both ways. israel is aiming at terrorist targets and that's what it looks and sounds like from a distance. here it is up close during an israeli and palestinian who are in the thick of it. >> let me jump in there, mohammed. when you hear him describe the situation where he is, what goes through your mind? >> sorry. that is one thing. carry on with your question. this morning. it's changing by the minute out of israel. this morning israeli tv reporting three israelis were killed in rocket strikes in the southern part of the country. this comes as the israeli military has launched an aggressive new campaign to cripple hamas after repeated rocket attacks. as many as 750 this year, they say, launched from gaza into southern israel. last night president obama spoke on the phone with prime minister benjamin netanyahu acknowledging israel's right to defend itself but also urging him to not have civilian casualties. this youtube video showing an air strike yesterday killing the top military commander of hamas. it was part of a widespread campaign against targets that the israeli military says it will broaden in the coming days. this morning defense forces dropped leaflets over gaza warning residents to stay away from hamas operatives. on twitter, a clear message from israeli defense forces. quote, we recommend that no hamas operatives, whether low level or senior leaders, show their faces above ground in the days ahead. president obama also spoke last night w

sunrise over israel and gaza. on a day that could see israeli troops cross the border for the first time in four years. gaza has already seen its share of destruction. this was posted on youtube. at least 11 people were killed today. israel wants to prevent any more scenes like this one, a militant rocket aimed toward the city of ashdod. but israel has the edge in technology here. its sophisticated iron dome system takes out most rockets before they find a target. israel's military is also armed with precision-guided missiles. in this case, striking what is said to be the home of an hamas leader. egypt is trying to prevent this war from getting out of hand. spearheading talks aimed at ending the violence. israel's prime minister says hamas can end all this. bd ben wedeman is watching the conflict play out. >> reporter: we've seen apparent urgent action by the israeli army in this area to get as much material, tanks, armoured personnel carriers and troops in the area around gaza in obvious preparation for a potential ground invasion of the gaza strip. but a decision to actually go in has

for joining me. so far, 16 people in gaza and israel are dead as violence escalates in the middle east. this time it could lead to a new war in that region. over the past 24 hours, palestinian military groups say israel launched more than 75 strikes for warplanes and ships, including the strike your looking at right there, which was actually posted on youtube and twitter. this strike on a car that killed the chief of hamas' military. now the two sides have fired dozens of rockets at one another. israel claims its defending its cities, following ongoing rocket attacks by palestinian militants. israel's military says it's targeting 100 sites across gaza. i know, youf heard this all before. this time it's different. because egypt is not happy with with israel. it's already reached out to president obama and told him, we must put an end to this aggression. sarah seidner is in the region and has the latest for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carol. yes, the number of those who have been killed during this escalation, fighting between gaza and israels had now risen.
